1About Jeep Safari in Jim Corbett

Jeep Safari is the most popular and widely chosen wildlife exploration activity in Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand. It allows visitors to enter designated core and buffer zones of the tiger reserve in a 4x4 open-top jeep accompanied by a certified naturalist guide and a trained driver. The safari covers forest tracks, riverbeds, grasslands, and dense Sal forest trails that are rich in wildlife.

Jim Corbett National Park is home to the Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephant, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Gharial, King Cobra, and over 600 species of birds. A jeep safari gives visitors the best chance of wildlife sightings due to the vehicle's mobility across different terrain types and zones.

Jeep Safaris are conducted in six designated safari zones โ€” Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Sona Nadi, Durga Devi, and Dhela. Each zone offers a unique landscape and wildlife experience. Entry to each zone requires an advance permit booked through the official Uttarakhand Forest Department portal.

2Key Highlights of Jeep Safari

  • Open-top 4x4 jeep with a maximum of 6 passengers for an unobstructed wildlife viewing experience

  • Each session covers approximately 30โ€“40 km of forest trail over 3 hours

3Jeep Safari Zones โ€” Overview & Details

Jim Corbett National Park is divided into six main safari zones. Each zone has a limited number of jeep permits per session to ensure minimal disturbance to wildlife. Below is a brief overview of each zone:

๐ŸŒฟ
Dhikala Zone
The largest and most famous zone in Jim Corbett. Known for its vast chaur (grasslands), Ramganga reservoir, and extremely high tiger density. Dhikala is open from November to June. Entry requires a special permit and is limited to a fixed number of jeeps per session. Overnight stay at Dhikala Forest Lodge is also available subject to forest department allocation.
๐ŸŒฒ
Bijrani Zone
Located near Amdanda Gate, Bijrani is one of the most accessible zones from Ramnagar town. It offers dense forest cover, open grasslands, and seasonal rivers. This zone is popular for tiger sightings and is open from October to June. Both morning and evening sessions are available.
๐Ÿ†
Jhirna Zone
The only zone open throughout the year, including the monsoon season (Julyโ€“September). Located in the southern buffer zone, Jhirna is known for Sloth Bear sightings and is a good option when other zones are closed. Entry is via Jhirna Gate, approximately 16 km from Ramnagar.
๐Ÿฆ…
Sona Nadi Zone
Located in the western part of the park, Sona Nadi (also known as Sonanadi) is a buffer zone known for excellent bird watching, elephant herds, and the Ramganga river. The forest here is less explored, making it ideal for nature enthusiasts seeking a quieter experience.
๐Ÿฆœ
Durga Devi Zone
Situated in the northeastern part of the park at a higher elevation, Durga Devi is known for its scenic mountain views, Mandal River, and rich birdlife. It is particularly popular among birding enthusiasts and is less crowded compared to other zones.
๐ŸŒพ
Dhela Eco-Tourism Zone
A relatively newer safari zone in Jim Corbett, Dhela is located in the buffer area and remains open throughout the year. It is a good option for visitors who could not secure permits for core zones. Dhela offers sightings of leopard, deer species, and various bird species.

The main base and reception centre for all Jim Corbett jeep safari bookings is located at Ramnagar, Uttarakhand. Zone-specific entry gates are located at different distances from Ramnagar town, ranging from 2 km (Bijrani Gate) to 35 km (Dhikala Gate).

6Best Time to Visit for Jeep Safari

Jim Corbett National Park is open to tourists from October to June for most zones. The monsoon months of July, August, and September cause closure of core zones including Dhikala. However, Jhirna and Dhela zones remain open year-round.

  • November to February: Cool and pleasant weather. Excellent for bird watching, landscape photography, and comfortable safari sessions. Migratory birds arrive during this period.
  • March to May: Warm but the best season for tiger and wildlife sightings. Animals congregate near waterholes and river banks, making sightings more frequent.
  • June: Hot weather. Core zones begin closing by mid-June for the monsoon season. Book early if planning a June visit.
  • July to September: Monsoon season. Dhikala, Bijrani, Sona Nadi, and Durga Devi zones are closed. Jhirna and Dhela remain accessible.
  • October: Park reopens after monsoon. Fresh greenery, good weather, and the start of the peak safari season.
