1About Elephant Safari in Jim Corbett

Elephant Safari is a traditional jungle activity offered in select zones of Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand. It gives visitors a chance to explore forest trails, grasslands, and riverbeds from an elevated seating position on an elephant. It is conducted in the Corbett Landscape reserve forest area and certain eco-tourism zones under the supervision of trained mahouts and forest guards.

This activity is ideal for those who want a slower, quieter alternative to jeep or canter safaris. It is particularly popular among families, wildlife enthusiasts, and nature photographers looking for a calm and immersive forest experience.

2Key Highlights of the Elephant Safari

  • A slow-paced, nature-friendly way to explore the forest without noise disturbance
  • Elevated seating offers a wider field of view for wildlife and bird spotting
  • Access to forest tracks and narrow trails not accessible by motorised vehicles
  • Conducted by experienced mahouts with knowledge of local wildlife and terrain
  • Suitable for adults, senior citizens, and children (with guardian)
  • Each session lasts approximately 2 hours with a maximum of 4 persons per elephant

5The Corbett Landscape — Safari Environment

The Corbett Landscape is a reserve forest area spread across the Kosi River belt, adjacent to Jim Corbett National Park. This stretch includes open grasslands, dense Sal forest, small water streams, and sandy riverbeds. The terrain is naturally suited for elephant movement, which is why this area forms the primary zone for elephant rides.

Visitors crossing the Kosi River on elephant-back and moving through forested trails experience a pace of exploration that no motorised vehicle can replicate. The sounds of birds, the rustle of leaves, and the sight of deer or wild boar in their natural environment make this a genuinely rewarding experience for those who appreciate nature at its own rhythm.
