1About Dhikala Night Stay

Dhikala Night Stay is widely considered one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences available in India. It allows visitors to spend one or more nights inside the core zone of Jim Corbett National Park at the historic Dhikala Forest Lodge, a government-managed accommodation facility located deep within the Dhikala Zone — far from any human settlement or commercial tourist activity.

Unlike a standard day safari where visitors enter the forest for a few hours and return to town, a Dhikala night stay places you completely inside the forest ecosystem. You wake up to the sounds of jungle birds, watch sunrise over the Ramganga reservoir and chaur grasslands, and experience the forest at its most undisturbed — at dawn, dusk, and after dark when nocturnal wildlife becomes active.

The Dhikala Forest Lodge complex includes multiple accommodation options — from basic dormitories and forest huts to the heritage Old Forest Rest House — all managed by the Uttarakhand Forest Department. Booking is done exclusively through the official government portal and is highly competitive, especially during the peak season of November to May.

2Why Dhikala Night Stay is Special

  • Stay inside the core zone — the only way to experience Jim Corbett's most wildlife-rich area from within, overnight, without returning to Ramnagar town
  • Sunrise over chaur grasslands — one of the most photographed and celebrated natural spectacles in the region, visible directly from the Dhikala machan and lodge premises
  • Access to two full safari sessions — evening safari on arrival day and morning safari the following day, both inside the core zone
  • Nocturnal wildlife activity — after dark, the forest around the lodge comes alive with sounds of tigers, elephants, and other nocturnal species that day visitors never experience
  • Ramganga reservoir views — the lodge overlooks the reservoir and grasslands, offering exceptional wildlife watching from the lodge premises without needing to board a vehicle
  • Heritage property — Dhikala Forest Lodge has historical significance as one of the oldest forest rest houses in the Corbett region, once used by forest officers and naturalists including Jim Corbett himself
  • Complete forest immersion — no commercial hotels, no town noise, no vehicles other than authorised forest vehicles — pure wilderness experience

3Accommodation Options at Dhikala Forest Lodge

The Dhikala Forest Lodge complex offers several types of accommodation, all managed by the Uttarakhand Forest Department. Below is an overview of the available accommodation options:

🏡
Forest Rest House (Old Bungalow)
The original heritage bungalow at Dhikala — a colonial-era forest rest house with basic but comfortable rooms. It is the most sought-after accommodation option at Dhikala due to its historic character, veranda views over the chaur grasslands, and proximity to the Ramganga reservoir. Rooms are limited and book out months in advance during peak season.
🪵
Log Huts
Comfortable wooden log huts offering a more private and rustic stay experience inside the forest. Log huts at Dhikala provide basic amenities including beds, linen, and attached or shared bathroom facilities. Ideal for couples, small families, and nature enthusiasts who want a private forest stay without dormitory sharing.
🛖
Forest Huts
Simple and basic forest huts with essential amenities. These are more affordable than log huts and the old bungalow, making them suitable for budget travellers, solo naturalists, and birdwatchers who prioritise forest access over accommodation comfort. Shared bathroom facilities are standard in most hut units.
🛏️
Dormitory
Shared dormitory accommodation available at Dhikala for individual travellers, students, and budget groups. The dormitory is the most economical option for a Dhikala night stay and is particularly popular among solo travellers, birding groups, and research visitors. Beds are allocated on a per-person basis.
🍽️
Canteen / Dining Facility
A basic government-run canteen is available at the Dhikala Forest Lodge complex. Simple meals — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — are served at fixed timings. The menu is limited but sufficient for overnight guests. Outside food delivery is not permitted inside the core zone.
🔭
Machan (Watch Tower)
A raised machan (observation platform) is located within the Dhikala lodge premises. It overlooks the chaur grasslands and Ramganga reservoir — offering an elevated vantage point for wildlife watching and photography, especially at dawn and dusk. Access is included for overnight lodge guests.

* All accommodation at Dhikala Forest Lodge is basic and nature-oriented. Do not expect hotel-level luxury facilities. Electricity may be available for limited hours. Hot water availability varies by season. The experience is designed around forest immersion, not resort comfort.

6What to Expect During Your Night Stay

🌅
Sunrise Over Chaur Grasslands
The sunrise view from the Dhikala machan and lodge veranda over the expansive chaur grasslands and Ramganga reservoir is one of the most celebrated natural spectacles in Jim Corbett. Golden light across the grasslands with deer, elephants, and birds in the foreground is a scene that no day visitor can access.
🌙
Night Sounds of the Forest
After dark, the Dhikala core zone comes alive. Tigers calling in the distance, elephants moving through the grasslands near the lodge, spotted deer alarm calls, owls, nightjars, and the rustling of the Ramganga river — sounds that no day safari visitor ever hears. This is the most exclusive aspect of a Dhikala night stay.
🐯
Wildlife Near the Lodge Premises
Elephants, deer, and occasionally tigers pass through or near the Dhikala lodge area, especially at night and early morning. Many guests report wildlife sightings from the lodge veranda or machan without boarding a safari vehicle — an experience unique to overnight guests.
🌿
Complete Forest Immersion
There are no commercial establishments, no urban noise, and no outside vehicles inside the Dhikala core zone after hours. The lodge is your world — surrounded entirely by tiger reserve forest. This level of immersion in a protected natural environment is exceptionally rare in India.
🦅
Dawn Bird Chorus
The dawn bird chorus at Dhikala is extraordinary. Starting before first light, hundreds of forest bird species begin calling simultaneously — a natural soundtrack that is unique to the core forest environment. Overnight guests experience this in its purest form, undisturbed by vehicles or crowds.
💧
Ramganga Reservoir at Night
The Ramganga reservoir under starlight is a stunning visual experience. With minimal light pollution deep inside the core zone, the night sky at Dhikala offers exceptional stargazing. The sounds of the river and nocturnal birds near the water make evenings at Dhikala genuinely unforgettable for nature lovers.
"The jungle is neutral — it is only our preparation and respect for it that determines our experience within."
— Inspired by Jim Corbett, Hunter, Conservationist & Author

7Best Time for Dhikala Night Stay

Dhikala Night Stay is available from October to June. Each season offers a distinct experience:

  • November to February: Cold nights and cool mornings. Ideal for bird watching — migratory waterbirds arrive at the Ramganga reservoir. Large elephant herds active in grasslands. Crisp early morning safaris. Stargazing at night is exceptional in winter. Carry warm clothing for night and early morning sessions.
  • March to May: Best season for tiger sightings. Animals congregate near water bodies as summer heat increases. Vegetation is reduced, improving sightlines across the chaur grasslands. Morning safaris often yield tiger and elephant sightings near the reservoir. Hot afternoons but cool, pleasant evenings.
  • June: Hot weather. Dhikala Zone begins closing in mid-to-late June. Book early if planning a June visit. Wildlife activity is high near water sources but daytime heat is intense.
  • July to September: Dhikala Zone is closed. Night stay not available. Jhirna and Dhela zones remain open for jeep day safari.
  • October: Zone reopens post-monsoon. Fresh greenery, good wildlife activity, and comfortable temperatures. Highly competitive booking period — permits fill up within hours of opening each month.

8What to Carry for Dhikala Night Stay

  • Original ID Proof — Same as used during permit and lodge booking (mandatory at gate)
  • Printed or digital permit and lodge booking confirmation — Download from the official government portal before departure
  • Warm clothing and a jacket for night and early morning sessions — temperatures inside the core zone drop significantly after sunset, especially in winter
  • Comfortable walking footwear — you may walk within the lodge premises for wildlife watching
  • Binoculars — essential for wildlife and bird watching from the machan and lodge veranda
  • Camera with a zoom or telephoto lens for wildlife photography. A tripod is useful for low-light dawn and dusk photography from the machan
  • Torch / flashlight — electricity inside the core zone lodge is limited to certain hours. A reliable torch is essential for night movement within the lodge premises
  • Personal medicines and a basic first aid kit — the nearest medical facility is in Ramnagar town, 18 km away
  • Water bottle — carry sufficient drinking water, especially for summer visits. The canteen may not always have packaged water readily available
  • Light snacks for the evening — the canteen serves meals at fixed times. If you arrive hungry between sessions, having personal snacks is useful
  • Insect repellent — particularly important for October, June, and early November visits
  • Power bank — charging points inside the lodge may have limited availability or hours
