1About Canter Safari in Jim Corbett

Canter Safari is a group wildlife safari conducted in an open-top, bus-style vehicle called a canter — a medium-sized truck fitted with tiered open seating that allows all passengers an elevated and unobstructed view of the forest. It is the most affordable shared safari option available in Jim Corbett National Park, making it ideal for budget travellers, school groups, large families, and visitors who prefer a group experience.

Canter Safari is primarily operated in the Dhikala Zone — the largest, most wildlife-rich, and most celebrated zone of Jim Corbett Tiger Reserve. The Dhikala Zone is famous for its vast open grasslands (locally called chaurs), the Ramganga reservoir, dense Sal forest, and one of the highest tiger densities in the country.

Each canter accommodates up to 16 passengers and is accompanied by a certified naturalist guide and a government-registered driver. The safari covers a fixed forest trail of approximately 30–40 km over a session of 3 hours, passing through diverse habitat types within the Dhikala buffer and core areas.

3Canter Safari Zone — Dhikala in Detail

The Canter Safari in Jim Corbett is almost exclusively associated with the Dhikala Zone, which is the crown jewel of the entire Corbett Tiger Reserve. Here is a detailed overview of what makes Dhikala the most sought-after zone for canter safari visitors:

🌾
Chaur Grasslands
Dhikala is known for its expansive open grasslands called chaurs. These seasonal floodplain meadows attract large numbers of deer, elephant herds, and tigers — especially during the dry months of March to May when vegetation is low and animals are easier to spot near water sources.
💧
Ramganga Reservoir
The Ramganga river and its reservoir run through the Dhikala zone, creating a rich wetland habitat. Gharial, Mugger Crocodile, Mahseer fish, and a variety of migratory waterfowl are regularly spotted along the riverbanks. The reservoir also creates stunning landscape views for photographers.
🌲
Sal Forest Tracks
Dense Sal (Shorea robusta) forest covers large sections of the Dhikala zone. These tracks are prime leopard and tiger habitat. The forest floor is rich with spotted deer, sambar, and barking deer. Langur monkeys and various raptor species are also commonly sighted here.
🐯
Tiger Territory
Dhikala has one of the highest concentrations of Bengal Tigers in Jim Corbett. Multiple territorial tigers are resident in and around the zone. Morning canter sessions near the chaurs and riverside tracks offer the best chance of tiger sightings throughout the year.
🐘
Elephant Herds
Large herds of Asian Elephants are a defining feature of the Dhikala zone. Herds of 20–30 elephants are commonly sighted in the chaur grasslands during early morning and evening sessions, especially between October and March.
🦅
Birding — 500+ Species
Dhikala is one of India's premier birding locations. Species like Pallas's Fish Eagle, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Crested Serpent Eagle, Brown Fish Owl, and hundreds of migratory waterfowl are seen near the reservoir and forest edges during different seasons.

Entry to the Dhikala Zone canter safari is via Dhangari Gate, located approximately 18 km from Ramnagar town. All canter safari permits for Dhikala are booked in advance through the official Uttarakhand Forest Department government portal. Walk-in availability at the gate is extremely limited, especially during peak season (November to May).

🐯

Dhikala has among the highest tiger concentrations in the park. Multiple resident tigers are recorded in the zone. The chaur grasslands and riverside tracks near the Ramganga reservoir are prime tiger territory, particularly during summer mornings when tigers visit waterholes.
🐘

🦅
Birds — 500+ Species
Dhikala is exceptional for bird watching. Pallas's Fish Eagle, Great Hornbill, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Brown Fish Owl, Crested Serpent Eagle, and many migratory waterbirds are recorded near the reservoir and forest clearings throughout the season.

7Best Time to Visit for Canter Safari

Canter Safari in Dhikala Zone is available from October to June. The Dhikala Zone remains closed during the monsoon months of July, August, and September for ecological restoration and wildlife protection.

  • November to February: Cool, pleasant weather. Excellent for bird watching near Ramganga reservoir. Large elephant herds active in grasslands. Comfortable morning safari sessions. Migratory birds present in large numbers.
  • March to May: Warm to hot weather but the best season for tiger sightings. Animals congregate near waterholes and river banks. Vegetation is lower, improving visibility significantly across the chaur grasslands and forest edges.
  • June: Hot weather. Dhikala Zone begins closing in mid-to-late June for the monsoon season. Book well in advance if planning a June visit as this is the last window before closure.
  • July to September: Dhikala Zone is closed. Canter Safari is not available during this period. Jeep Safari in Jhirna and Dhela zones remains an option for this season.
  • October: Park reopens after monsoon. Fresh green forest, good weather, and the beginning of the peak safari season. Book permits well in advance as the opening weeks fill up quickly.

8What to Carry for Your Canter Safari

  • Original ID Proof — Same as used during permit booking (mandatory at the gate)

  • Comfortable clothing in earthy or neutral tones — avoid bright colours and white inside the forest
  • Binoculars for bird and wildlife watching from the canter vehicle
  • Camera with a zoom or telephoto lens for wildlife photography — animals are often spotted at distance in open grasslands
  • Light jacket or warm layer for early morning winter sessions — it can be cold near the Ramganga river at dawn
  • Water bottle — stay hydrated, especially during summer morning sessions
  • Light snacks — no food with strong odours. No eating on the canter vehicle inside the core zone
  • Sunscreen, hat, and UV-protection sunglasses for summer visits — the open-top canter offers no shade
